Congratulations you're married! What's next?

CONGRATULATIONS! You're married! The wedding went off without a hitch and you're back from relaxing in the sun on your honeymoon! But what do you need to do now? First, decide on whether you want to change your name or not. Do you want to change completely or double barrel it? It's completely your choice. If you decided you don't wish to change it, then this isn't the post the for you but if you do want to, read on for a list of where to change it!

Decide on what you want to do. Take your partners name? Double Barrel? Change your middle name to your maiden name (as an additional middle) to keep it as part of your legal name? (you'll need to apply by deed poll to change your name if this is the case). Combine your surnames? (i.e. Smith and Tuth to Suth) Or maybe you want to change your name but keep using your maiden name informally?

You need to change your name at all the relevant places!

You may need to supply a copy of your marriage certificate and deed poll certificate before you can apply for a new passport. If you are booking a honeymoon for straight after your wedding, it's wise to book them in your maiden name.

If you are double-barelling your surname, your marriage certificate will suffice with a note stating your chosen surname along with the order and whether it is hyphenated.

If it i not a straight forward change, you will need to do it by deed poll.

1. DVLA (if you don't do this immediately, you can be fined up to £100!

If you are taking your partners name, you don't need to change your name by deed poll but you do need to send a copy of your marriage certificate to all relevant authorities (such as the DVLA).
